Job summary

PetVet Care Centers’ Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, KY is seeking an Internal Medicine Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians in an in-clinic hospital setting, including equine care and critical care exposure. Qualifications

• Required: Equine experience with comfort handling foals and difficult horses.
• Preferred: Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or over one year related experience and/or training.
• Language Ability: read, analyze and interpret general technical procedures; write/document technical information; communicate with doctors, staff and clients.
• Math Ability: calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages and volume.
• Reasoning Ability: apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions; solve problems.
• Computer Skills: general computer software knowledge and keyboarding skills.
• Certificates and Licenses: Veterinary Technician License preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Participate in rounds and review significant changes in patient status during daily rounds.
• Administer treatments ordered by the veterinarian (oral, IM, IV, SQ, topical) including fluids and nutrition support.
• Assist veterinarians with procedures (endoscopy, ultrasound, reproductive exams, radiographs, joint lavage, catheter/Nasogastric tube placement).
• Prepare medications, fluids and supplies for patients.
• Monitor vital signs and document observations and patient status.
