Job summary

SUNY Maritime College in Bronx, NY seeks an Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Counselor to manage a caseload of EOP students and aid in admission, transition, and retention through counseling, advisement, and referrals. The role reports to the Director of EOP and SEA Center and includes supporting the annual EOP summer program.

Responsibilities include group and individual counseling, program development, and collaboration with admissions for eligibility and recruitment.

Qualifications

• Master's-level education in Higher Education, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or related field.
• Minimum 1 year of experience in student academic advising.
• Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
• General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
• Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
• Proficiency in utilizing computer and word processing software.

Responsibilities

• Independently provide comprehensive advisement to a caseload of current EOP students.
• Analyze student skills and performance to assist in planning and major selection.
• Assist students with personal, academic, financial, or career challenges.
• Collaborate with the Director on program expansion and onboarding.
• Select suitable educational or vocational goals for students.
• Develop solutions using counseling best practices and professional judgment.
• Maintain contact with students and monitor academic progress.
• Support LEAD 101 freshman seminar each Fall semester.
• Assist with interviewing, hiring, and training Summer Program staff.
• Contribute to evaluating EOP applicants’ transcripts and forms for eligibility.
