Job description

The Environmental Specialist role is responsible for leading site environmental compliance performance improvement through implementation of the environmental compliance management system (work processes, standard, procedures) to meet EHS&S performance objectives and maintain the license to operate. This role is leveraged across multiple facilities at the site.

The Environmental Specialist role is responsible to partner with EHS&S Leader, EHS&S Center of Expertise (CoE) and Site Leadership to ensure appropriate, consistent implementation and maintenance of EH&S work processes, best practices and most effective technologies; coordinate, align priorities and initiatives; audit the effectiveness of work processes and implementation; analyze performance data for trends and identify opportunities for improvement across the site.

What You’ll Do:
  • Act as the focal point for the site for environmental compliance.
  • Coordinate, implement and optimize global environmental management systems and programs for across the site
  • Manage environmental permits. This includes submittal of permit applications for new and modified equipment, requests for permit changes and submittal of permit renewal applications to ensure continuous license to operate.
  • Responsible for the submission, negotiation and implementation of new or revised environmental licenses/permits. Provides templates, tools, guidance etc. for compliance with new/revised licenses/permits.
  • Collect, input and calculate environmental reporting information and maintain all environmental records in accordance with the company record retention policy
  • Works with plant operations personnel to arrange for required performance testing of control devices, including coordination of test plans, scheduling testing, reviewing the test reports and submitting the applicable data to state agencies.
  • Lead response to agency requests, potential enforcement actions, etc., including data collection and development of response packages
  • Lead agency inspections including preparation activities and hosting inspectors while on site.
  • Participates in plant project reviews, pre-startup reviews, risk reviews, etc. as they relate to environmental matters and lead implementation of required environmental tasks to ensure compliance for each review
  • Identify opportunities to streamline environmental resources and work processes.
  • Utilize environmental Center of Expertise for obtaining interpretations of site-specific regulatory requirements, regulations, laws and associated procedures
  • Able to identify and keep current with local, area and regional environmental requirements that are not supported by global regulatory affairs. Interpret, implement and ensure full sustainable compliance with those external requirements.
  • Participate in and provide data for environmental audits
  • Participate in incident investigations and the corrective action process for environmental issues and opportunities.
  • Coach, train and mentor environmental technicians, waste coordinator, and specialists.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • A BS Degree in Chemical Engineering, environmental engineering, Environmental, or related discipline.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
  • Knowledge of all regulatory, permit, and company requirements for areas of responsibility
  • Knowledge of all Environmental work processes and tools,
  • Working knowledge of plant /department operations and processes with some understanding of engineering calculations used for reporting purposes
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must be able to effectively screen the local external environmental compliance regulatory environment, identify and effectively implement regulatory changes to maintain License to Operate.
  • Can coach and positively influence behavior change in others on environmental compliance expectations and requirements.
  • Must be comfortable and competent at interfacing with external governmental organizations
  • Self-motivated independent thinker and performer
  • Works methodically and meets required deadlines, while managing multiple projects and priorities
  • Capable consultation, facilitation, and influencing skills at all levels at the site
  • Demonstrate open and clear communications and processes for issue resolution
  • Ability to analyze technical writing and regulations
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant work experience in Environmental Health and Safety, a laboratory, or a manufacturing facility.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and have the ability to learn new systems quickly.
