Job summary

SECO Energy is seeking an Environmental Compliance Specialist to ensure adherence to state and federal environmental regulations for oil-filled equipment, PCB handling, and spill response. Responsibilities include testing, storage, disposal, audits, and documentation to support safe, compliant operations.

The role requires an associate degree in environmental science and 4+ years in environmental compliance, preferably within an electric utility.

Qualifications

  • The candidate must have an Associate degree in environmental science or a related field.
  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience in environmental compliance within electric utility or related industry; can substitute for the degree.
  • One (1) year progressive experience in environmental compliance is required.
  • Preferred: experience within an electric utility or related industry.

Responsibilities

  • Repair, test, and dispose of oil-filled equipment and perform high/low voltage tests to determine service readiness.
  • Respond to emergencies for proper cleanup, storage, and disposal of oil spills and PCB-contaminated equipment.
  • Conduct periodic environmental audits/inspections of storage locations and maintain documentation.

Requirements
Education
  • Minimum: Two (2) year associate degree in environmental science or related field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in environmental compliance with an electric utility or related industry may be considered in lieu of associate degree.
Experience
  • Minimum: One (1) year progressive experience in environmental compliance.
  • Preferred: Experience within an electric utility or related industry.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including a personal computer, printers, copy machines and telephone.
  • Ability to work irregular hours for assignment completion and flexibility to change scheduling and report to work on short notice during emergency situations.
  • A valid Florida driver’s license for regular driving privileges of a company vehicle; must have and maintain an acceptable driving record as determined by SECO Energy.
  • Frequent business travel to all areas of service territory required.
  • Normal work hours will be eight (8) hours Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, physical and drug screen.

Living Requirement
  • To ensure timely response to Call outs, must live within 40-mile radius from the assigned reporting location. Employees who live more than a 40-mile radius from their assigned reporting location must relocate within 6 months of employment.

Electrical Equipment Maintenance & Testing
  • Repair, test, and maintain electrical distribution and substation equipment, including transformers, reclosers, oil switches, circuit breakers, regulators, and capacitors.
  • Maintain components and supplies necessary for equipment maintenance, including test kits, oil, and fuses.
  • Inspect and clean transformer pans to ensure operational safety and environmental compliance.
Hazardous Material & PCB Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and company regulations related to the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, including PCBs.
  • Respond to oil spills, PCB debris, and oil-soaked soil incidents, ensuring timely response and regulatory compliance.
  • Schedule and collect PCB oil samples for compliance testing and maintain accurate records of test results.
  • Inspect and monitor the PCB storage facility on a regular basis.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of spill clean-up materials for all operational sites.
Equipment Disposal & Recordkeeping
  • Compile data for all SECO Energy-owned oil-filled equipment, including transformers, oil circuit reclosers, and voltage regulators—being sent for reconditioning or disposal.
  • Initiate proper disposal procedures and ensure all documentation is complete and in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Conduct inventory of transformers and related electrical equipment in and out of the receiving area.
  • Follow up on cleanup activities as required.
Environmental Auditing
  • Conduct environmental audits, as directed, to support regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.
