Colliers Engineering & Design seeks an Environmental Staff Scientist to perform wetland and stream delineations, habitat characterizations, GPS data collection, and GIS work in Raleigh, NC with travel. 2–5 years of related experience and a BS in ecological or environmental sciences are preferred.

The role blends field and office work, supporting interdisciplinary teams of engineers, surveyors, and planners. Proficiency in ArcGIS/AutoCAD and MS Office is expected.

Job description

Overview

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking an Environmental Staff Scientist with 2-5 years of experience to perform wetland and stream delineations, protected species and habitat characterizations, GPS data collection, Arc-GIS application, preparation of permits and reports in support of federal, state and local permits. Take responsible charge for collecting field data, interpreting data and preparing technical reports. Work with a team of environmental professionals including professional engineers, surveyors, and planners in an interdisciplinary setting. Daily activities may include site reconnaissance, conducting environmental due diligence investigations and assessments, collection of soil and groundwater samples, and laboratory data management. This position will require travel and is expected to have a 30% - 60% balance between field and office work, which will vary based on project needs. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, ecological science, environmental science, environmental engineering, or related scientific discipline. This position is targeted to be loocated in the Raleigh, North Carolina office; however, depending on the ideal candidates location, other offices such as Charlotte and Wilmington, North Carolina may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Perform Wetland Delineations in accordance with the Army Corp of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual.
• Assist in the preparation of applications for wetland verifications and permits to regulatory agencies.
• Assist in the preparation and assemblage of natural resource reports and supporting documentation to facilitate site development and redevelopment.
• Facilitate permit procurement from jurisdictional agencies.
• Assist in the preparation of Threatened and Endangered Species Habitat Evaluations, and correspondence with regulatory agencies and permit management.
• Assist in the preparation of environmental impacts and assessments.
• Preparation of written correspondence - Outside agencies, client, attorney, contractor, etc. Also includes preparation of technical reports.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree is preferred in Ecological Science, or related scientific discipline.
• 2-5 years of similar experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
• Familiar with the capabilities of Arc-GIS and/or Auto-CADD.
• Familiar with GPS data collection.
• Self-starter, can work independently and with team members.
• Basic knowledge of wetlands and natural ecological systems.
• Basic understanding of the hydrology of natural ecological systems.
• Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job‑related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to hike in woods and carry 5-lbs for extended periods of time when performing field investigations.

Working Conditions/Environment

• The majority of this position’s time will be dedicated to field work, while a portion will be office work. Field conditions will be subject to current weather conditions.
