Job description:

LATA is currently searching for an Environmental Scientist II (Counting Room Analyst) to support the Analytical Services Team (AST) in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This position supports the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and is located at the WIPP site. The Environmental Scientist II supports WIPP programs by managing environmental samples and associated analytical data, working closely with LATA management, the Management and Operating Contractor, WIPP site departments, analytical laboratory subcontractors, and other environmental organizations to ensure data are accurate, complete, compliant with applicable requirements, and legally defensible.

Responsibilities include coordinating gross alpha/gross beta filter analyses, shipping samples for destructive analysis, ensuring proper documentation, verifying data accuracy, and maintaining records in accordance with project requirements. This position is located at the WIPP site.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Sample receipt, custody, packaging and shipment.
  • Maintain counting room instruments, equipment, and supplies by coordinating with other personnel.
  • Verify that counting room procedures, practices, and analyses are correct and adequate for the intended usage and documented and coordinated with the client's program for the required accuracy and reliability of the results.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Science, Chemistry, or other technical fields, with 1 to 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of sampling for hazardous constituents and RCRA requirements.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other individuals and project groups is highly encouraged.
  • Attention to detail. Initiative is required.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office to prepare Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and reports.
  • Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with various site-wide departments and organizations.
Additional Information
  • Base Compensation $57,797.70 - $103,996.50/year
