The Environmental Radiochemist position with the Arizona Department of Health Services in Phoenix performs radiochemical analyses of environmental samples including air, soil, water, and milk, as well as inspections of radiation facilities to ensure safety and compliance.

Key duties include sample collection near major facilities, gamma/beta radiochemistry analyses, dosimetry, QA activities, and statewide radiation safety program support.

Formación

• Knowledge of radiation safety and environmental protections for ionizing/non-ionizing radiation
• Experience with liquid scintillation counting, gamma spectrometry, gas flow proportional counting, and thermoluminescent dosimetry
• Familiarity with laboratory safety requirements, procedures, and sampling methods
• Clear written and verbal communication for reporting results and updating procedures
• Ability to use computers to perform analyses and documentation tasks
• Understanding of QA/QC requirements in laboratory analysis
• Ability to assess safety/regulatory significance and recommend corrective actions
• Support a diverse workforce and promote an inclusive work environment

Responsabilidades

• Perform radiochemical analysis of environmental samples (air, water, soil, milk) and radiation facilities inspections
• Process samples using gamma/beta emitting radionuclide techniques
• Prepare, place, and analyze thermoluminescent dosimeters
• Evaluate and interpret measurement results
• Conduct QA activities and peer review radiochemical analyses
• Plan and conduct inspections related to radiation safety and licensing
• Respond to incidents involving radioactive material across the state
