Job summary

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory seeks an Environmental Functional Area Manager to lead the EFA with strategic oversight, regulatory compliance, and a focus on environmental performance. You will guide a multidisciplinary team of 40+ professionals, ensure EMS effectiveness, and coordinate with DOE Livermore Field Office and other stakeholders to deliver mission-aligned environmental programs.

You will help attract talent, manage budgets, and advance the Laboratory’s environmental strategy

Qualifications

• Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance requiring U.S. citizenship.
• Extensive leadership experience in a large, regulated organization with multidisciplinary teams.
• Expert knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and industry practices.
• Experience applying regulatory requirements to complex programs and missions.
• Ability to translate regulatory changes into actionable guidance for Lab programs.
• Proven skills in risk assessment, prioritization, and decision making at senior levels.
• Experience in strategic planning, budgeting, and workforce development.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Environmental Functional Area (EFA) day-to-day operations and technical direction.
• Provide strategic vision, oversight, and program development for environmental compliance.
• Collaborate with DOE, regulators, and internal leaders to integrate environmental considerations.
• Represent LLNL on environmental matters with external stakeholders and regulators.
• Oversee EMS, risk assessment, and ISO 14001-aligned practices for LLNL operations.
• Develop performance metrics and manage salary, hiring, and staff development.
• Drive organizational effectiveness through benchmarking and continuous improvement.
