Job summary

The OPS Environmental Specialist I, based in Tallahassee, FL, prepares and analyzes environmental samples to identify algal taxa for Florida DEP's water quality monitoring and algae bloom response.

You will support senior taxonomists, operate laboratory equipment, and troubleshoot methodologies to deliver high-quality data for surface and groundwater assessments. This on-site role emphasizes strict SOP adherence and precise analytical work.

Qualifications

• At least four years of verifiable experience in biological, environmental, natural, or physical sciences.
• Skill in using compound, inverted, and dissecting microscopes for analytical purposes.
• Knowledge of aquatic biology, ecology, and environmental sciences concepts and techniques.
• Ability to sit and use a microscope daily and complete repetitive tasks accurately.
• Ability to understand and follow technical instructions, SOPs, and quality assurance procedures.
• Knowledge of algae identification terminology and analytical techniques (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Prepare and analyze environmental samples for identification of algal taxa.
• Support Florida DEP's monitoring of water quality and blue-green algae blooms.
