Job summary

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s DEAR Laboratory Biology Program in Tallahassee seeks an OPS Environmental Specialist I to prepare and analyze environmental samples for algal taxonomy, supporting senior taxonomists and new equipment adoption.

Role focuses on high-quality laboratory services, data QA, and flexible teamwork, with a pay rate of $23.38/hour and opportunities to contribute to Florida’s water resource restoration efforts.

Qualifications

• At least four years of verifiable related experience in biological, environmental, natural, or physical sciences, or a degree with year-for-year substitution.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Knowledge of algae taxonomy and identification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and analyze environmental samples to identify dominant algal taxa to the lowest practical level.
• Provide analytical support to senior taxonomists and aid in operating new equipment or methodologies.
• Troubleshoot and maintain lab quality through QA/QC procedures and SOPs.
