Prince William County Division of Risk & Wellness Services is seeking motivated problem-solvers that can inspire others to expand the bounds of traditional safety and environmental programming into system-wide innovations and sustainable risk prevention solutions. This full-time position as Environmental, Health, & Safety Manager is ideal for someone that wants to make a difference in their community and enjoys the challenge of a job that is different every day.

This position will work internal to County operations, working with all departments and developing strategic plans to tackle a wide range of environmental, health, and safety compliance initiatives through hands‑on field work, interactive training, and project management. This person must be dedicated to providing the highest level of service to direct-reports, County employees, and citizens, in a division where teamwork is an essential function.

About This Role:

Personnel in this position will:

• Actively manage and participate in the daily operations of a comprehensive environmental, safety, health and wellness program by establishing risk management and liability reduction procedures; and ensuring department compliance with all applicable policies and regulations.
• Supervise staff to include: prioritizing, assigning and scheduling work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures, and maintain a healthy and safe working environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
• Perform complex technical work related to a wide range of safety and environmental initiatives;
• Provide technical assistance, consultation, training, and guidance on environmental and safety policies and regulations to all County departments and reporting personnel;
• Facilitate and manage compliance audits and inspections, making programming recommendations for department management for high-level control measures;
• Prepare professional reports and documents, and complete regulatory filings and submissions;
• Create and deliver engaging and effective outreach and education programs.

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or G.E.D and 7 years of experience in Environmental, Health & Safety program management.

Preferences:

The successful candidate will have:

• A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in the Environmental, Health and Safety field, or closely related,
• 8 or more years professional experience in environmental and/or safety compliance programming.
• A minimum of 2 years of experience supervising employees and/or oversight of cross‑functional teams.
• Skills and experience in developing and leading successful Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) teams;
• Ability to develop strategic programming based on claims and incident data, that also considers the culture and diversity of groups that are served;
• Ability to recognize opportunities for program improvement and efficiencies, and be successful in a fast‑paced environment;
• Strong project management experience and a passion and enthusiasm for helping others achieve a safe and healthy workplace;
• Advanced knowledge of safety and/or environmental regulations and best management practices related to compliance and sustainability program management;
• Experience conducting field work related to safety and/or environmental audits and inspections;
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with County employees and become a trusted team member;
• Strong presentation and training skills;
• One or more professional certifications related to the position such as CHP, PMP, OHST, PMP. CHMM, REM, REP, ARM, or similar.

Special Requirements:

• Must possess a valid driver’s licence
• Must pass DMV record check.
• Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; and occasionally lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds.

Work Schedule:

37.5 hours per week; Monday‑Friday. The office is located in Woodbridge. Job duties will require a combination of field work, office work, and telework.

Starting Salary Range

$91,162.50 - $121,836.00/yr.
