Job summary

Job Duties

"There is a local salary supplement of 20% in addition to the listed state salary range for this position."
Manages environmental programs in a district or central office work unit, focused on intermediate to long term actions such as strategic planning, securing: financial resources, staffing, regulatory and public resources & support. Administrative and operational actions, policy and quality assurance responsibilities are included, along with supervision of staff. (Examples: food, milk and frozen dessert programs; soils and sewage programs; air, noise and shellfish programs or drinking water and wastewater programs.)
The Prince William Health District is a growing, diverse, and dynamic community in Northern Virginia located approximately 30 miles from Washington, D.C. Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to pass pre-appointment criminal records check and a background investigation.
  • Knowledge of all Environmental Health (EH) programs as well as epidemiology, leadership, and management principles.
  • Skills in program management, risk assessment, software automation, coaching leading, and supervision.
  • Written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on technical reports.
  • Ability to manage collaboratively complex, multifaceted EH programs, develop and manage teams, and create shared visions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, the public, and state and local government officials.
  • Ability to handle difficult and rapidly changing scenarios.
  • A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency

Additional Considerations

  • Must have VDH Standardized Food certification, DPOR conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator (COSE) certification, DPOR Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator (AOSE), VDH Certified Milk Sanitation Officer certification, VDH Certified Food Safety Standardization Officer certification, VDH Certified Onsite Sewage System Technical Specialist certification, or National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) State Standardized Inspector certification as outlined for the Environmental Health Spec Sr. and Environmental Health Technical Specialist to perform inspections or evaluations.
  • NEHA Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) credentialed.
  • Pertinent work experience and non-college training may substitute for formal education.
  • Experience with the Incident Command System (ICS)
