Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection seeks a Geoscientist to study mining impacts on water, land, and communities. You will assess geological data, support regulatory decisions, and coordinate cross‑agency reviews.

Responsibilities include reviewing permits, interpreting hydrologic data, preparing technical findings, inspecting sites, and assisting investigations. Telework may be available up to 3 days/week with PA residency required.

Qualifications

• One year as a Geoscience Trainee or
• One year of professional geology experience with a relevant bachelor's degree (30 geologic credits) or
• Active Geologist-in-Training certificate with one year of professional geologic experience or
• Equivalent combination of experience and training including 30 geologic credits.

Responsibilities

• Review mining permits and evaluate geologic and hydrologic data.
• Interpret water quality, flow data, and environmental conditions to assess impacts.
• Coordinate technical reviews and support permit decisions with agencies.
• Prepare clear technical deficiency letters, findings, and recommendations.
• Inspect mine sites to collect data and identify pollution risks.
• Assist with water loss studies, stream recovery evaluations, and closure plan reviews.

Education

Bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, geoscience, geophysics, geochemistry, engineering geology, or related field
