Job summary

The State of Connecticut - Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) seeks an Engineer Trainee for the Attainment Planning Group in Hartford. This full-time, hybrid position offers a one-year training program under supervision, with promotion on successful completion and a defined career path within DEP’s Air Bureau.

Starting as Engineer Trainee, you will build engineering skills in emission inventories, air quality modeling, and regulatory analysis while supporting daily

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or coursework in engineering, meteorology, mathematics, or physical sciences.
  • Experience with air pollution coursework and regulations.
  • Experience with atmospheric chemistry and meteorology.
  • Experience with photochemical grid models and outputs.
  • Experience using R or Python and VERDI or Power BI to analyze data.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams; meet deadlines with competing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with engineering assessments including emission rate verifications and cost studies.
  • Assist in reviewing emission inventories for regional models.
  • Assist in modeling stationary/mobile emissions for planning purposes.
  • Assist in reviewing proposed federal regulations and calculate effects on air pollution.
  • Assist in preparing detailed technical and engineering reports.
  • Analyze monitored air quality data and meteorology for trends.
  • Attend training to enhance air pollution knowledge.
  • Assist with daily air quality forecasts and related communications.
