Job Description

Terracon is seeking a Department Manager to lead and grow our Environmental Consulting practice in the Kansas City metropolitan area. This position offers a unique opportunity to join our talented leadership team based in Lenexa, Kansas, and lead an established group of environmental practitioners covering multiple disciplines. The role is ideal for individuals strong in client and business development, team building and mentoring, business operations management, and strategic planning. The successful candidate will work closely with the Office Manager, Regional Manager, and Environmental Service Line leadership to expand and elevate the practice regionally.

General Responsibilities:
  1. Supervise teams to ensure work is executed on time, providing a positive client experience.
  2. Supervise proposal and cost estimate preparation to ensure proper scoping, resource availability, and profitability.
  3. Manage daily department operations including staff training, development, performance reviews, equipment and facilities utilization, safety, project quality, timely delivery, and policy adherence.
  4. Participate in business development activities to identify, develop, win, and execute project opportunities and maintain client relationships.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute the department growth strategy and annual business plan.
  • Partner with client development staff and other service line leaders to grow existing client relationships and develop new business opportunities.
  • Lead talent recruitment and selection to support strategic growth.
  • Oversee training, mentoring, and employee development within the department.
  • Manage business development activities, proposals, and project workflows to ensure adequate revenue and resource allocation.
  • Track key performance metrics such as revenue growth, staff chargeability, billing, collections, and project profitability.
  • Promote continuous quality improvement and monitor quality standards and risk management practices.
  • Lead safety initiatives, ensuring team compliance with safety rules and fostering a safe work environment, including pre-task planning.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline (e.g., Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology) and 8 years of practice experience.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
Preferred Certifications:
  • Graduate degree (preferred).
  • Professional certification or licensure in the relevant field (preferred).
