Job summary

American Electric Power is seeking an Environmental Coordinator Principal to lead environmental compliance programs across regions, plants and projects, ensuring regulatory alignment with corporate policies and strategic goals.

You will coach and develop staff, coordinate with Environmental Services, contractors and regulators, and provide training and technical guidance to business units while supporting SMR, renewables and other generation assets.

Qualifications

• Minimum of twelve years of environmental experience with an associate degree.
• Ten years of environmental experience with a bachelor’s degree.
• Advanced knowledge of listed environmental programs and standards.

Job Summary

The Environmental Coordinator Principal is responsible for coordinating the implementation of environmental compliance programs, permit requirements, and corporate environmental policies, standards, procedures and strategic environmental goals within their assigned region, plant and project scope. Responsibilities include ensuring direct reports meet performance and development goals, providing training, guidance and other necessary support to business unit leadership and staff on applicable environmental requirements, identifying applicable environmental requirements associated with Company assets and projects, and coordinating with the appropriate business unit staff, Environmental Services representatives, contractors, and external parties to ensure compliance with environmental requirements.

The Environmental Coordinator Principal should have an advanced understanding of the following environmental programs:

• Above ground and underground storage tanks
• Transportation of hazardous materials
• Solid and hazardous waste management
• Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures
• Wastewater, storm water, groundwater, and drinking water sampling, reporting and control
• Oil and chemical spill response and management
• Air emissions monitoring, control and reporting
• Asbestos and PCB management
• Pollution prevention
• Environmental site assessments
• Emergency planning and community right-to-know

Key competencies of this position are technical expertise, planning and organization ability, problem solving, written and oral communication skills and initiative. Must be able to work autonomously and with limited to no supervision and assume manager responsibilities in the absence of direct management.

What you’ll do:

Essential Job Functions & Tasks

• Coordinate and implement all environmental activities and policies in the assigned region(s) to ensure compliance with environmental laws, regulations and Company policies, standards, procedures and strategic environmental goals. Assist and provide input to Environmental Services on the development of Company environmental policies and procedures. Communicate deviations appropriately.
• Provide training, instruction and assistance to others on the implementation of environmental requirements and assist in the development of environmental training materials.
• Provide support in the event of a release or discharge of a regulated substance including making agency notifications, arranging contractor support, directing cleanup efforts if necessary and completing follow-up reports with regulatory agencies.
• Promote and enforce safe work practices to safeguard employees, contractors, the general public, and Company facilities.
• Provide support during environmental compliance reviews, Phase I or II environmental site assessments and remediation projects.
• Coordinate and respond to public inquiries regarding environmental matters.
• Develop and maintain environmental documents and records in accordance with environmental content management standards.
• Conduct environmental reviews of regional disposal contractors and related facilities and manage contracts associated with Environmental Services.
• Ensure direct reports are meeting job expectations. Motivate direct reports by providing feedback and skills development as well as perform administrative duties associated with the management of direct reports such as time approval and performance evaluations.

Candidate will be responsible for working as a fully engaged and integral part of our environmental and project teams to support new generation project diligence and permitting including Small Nuclear Reactor (SMR) and other nuclear technologies, and renewable energy (wind, solar, battery storage, etc.) and providing ongoing environmental permitting and compliance support to SMR, renewable, hydroelectric, and other generating assets. Engages in regulatory development activities, as well as environmental research related to nuclear and renewables. Must have a strong desire to support all phases of new generation facilities (due diligence through operational support).

What we’re looking for:

Experience:

• Minimum of twelve years of environmental experience with an associate degree or ten years of environmental experience with a bachelor’s degree.

Licenses/Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license

Physical demand ranges from sedentary to light duty.

Other preferences:

• Must possess advanced knowledge in the competencies of the programs listed in the job summary above.
• Travel time ranges from 20% – 40% and will include overnight stays on occasion.
• Must be available by phone after work hours and weekends; frequency is minimal.

Physical Demands

The Physical Demand Level for this job is L – Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 12 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 5‑6 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) When it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time, but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
