American Electric Power (AEP) in Roanoke, VA, seeks an Environmental Coordinator Principal to support regulatory compliance for its electric generating assets. You will coordinate permits, maintain records, and liaise with federal, state, and local agencies to ensure adherence to environmental requirements.
You’ll mentor planning staff, develop detailed outage plans, and support field operations with technical guidance while advancing safety and reliability of the grid.
Support activities and processes related to the operation of an electric generating unit composed of boilers, turbines, generators, transformers, pumps, condensers and auxiliary equipment. Perform studies and analysis related to the installation, alteration, overhaul, maintenance and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment, instruments and controls. Assist in planning major installation and maintenance projects. Coordinate and participate in productivity analysis and improvement studies.

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: L – Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 12 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 5-6 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. The Environmental Coordinator Principal is responsible for coordinating the implementation of environmental compliance programs, permit requirements, and corporate environmental policies, standards, procedures and strategic environmental goals within their assigned region, plant and project scope. Responsibilities include ensuring direct reports meet performance and development goals, providing training, guidance and other necessary support to business unit leadership and staff on applicable environmental requirements, identifying applicable environmental requirements associated with Company assets and projects, and coordinating with the appropriate business unit staff, Environmental Services representatives, contractors, and external parties to ensure compliance with environmental requirements. The Environmental Coordinator Principal should have an advanced understanding of the following environmental programs: Above ground and underground storage tanks, Transportation of hazardous materials, Solid and hazardous waste management, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures, Wastewater, storm water, groundwater, and drinking water sampling, reporting and control, Oil and chemical spill response and management, Air emissions monitoring, control and reporting, Asbestos and PCB management, Pollution prevention, Environmental site assessments, and Emergency planning, and community right-to-know. Key competencies of this position are technical expertise, planning and organization ability, problem solving, written and oral communication skills and initiative. Must be able to work autonomously and with limited to no supervision and assume manager responsibilities in the absence of direct management.
Perform in a safe and efficient manner highly skilled work necessary in the operation and maintenance of gas/oil fueled electric generating unit composed of gas/steam turbines, generators, boilers/heat recovery steam generator (HRSGs), transformers, pumps, condensers, switchyard, and related auxiliary equipment. Operate the plant in startup, shutdown, steady state mode and abnormal conditions. Direct the work of outside operators, support personnel and contractors. Participate and direct others in development of operating procedures for abnormal operating conditions. Perform highly technical and skilled work in the checking, inspecting, repair, maintenance, installation and construction of plant equipment and structures. Perform and direct others in the troubleshooting of complex problems. Perform highly technical and skilled work in conjunction with troubleshooting the malfunctions and controls logic of electrical and electronic systems, digital control systems, communication systems, instruments and control systems, interlocks, computers, annunciator systems and recorders Perform technical work in chemical analyses, industrial hygiene and environmental testing and calculations related to the operating efficiency of power plant equipment. Perform and be responsible for environmental reporting and compliance with environmental and OSHA regulations. Conduct tests, surveys and layout work on plant projects. Communicate and coordinate activities affecting safe and efficient operation of plant in an often distracting and multitasking environment. Prepare and participate in development plans for lower classification employees and provides effective feedback. Provide leadership among peers and acts as exemplary representative of company in the community.
Functions as a leader and mentor for the planning team. Leads the planning development of detailed work plans and outage plans. Develop plans by establishing measurable goals, objectives and requirements relative to specific area of responsibility. Establishes critical path, outage and maintenance work plans. Determine required labor both internal and external. Exhibits advanced level of proficiency in the planning function Work Management System(s) Reporting Tool ' Business Objects, Primavera (P6) required to leading and participating in outage / project assignments in a safe, healthy, efficient and economical manner. Ability to develop schedules along with updating and produce reports out of the scheduling software. Plan and manage unit scheduled and/or forced outages, establishes work scopes based on previous outage inspection reports, predictive, preventative maintenance, lessons learned, facility health reports, long range planning and NDE test results.
