Job summary

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to support the Compliance Assurance Program in Jacksonville, FL. The role focuses on ERP compliance assistance, inspections, and related documentation to ensure regulatory adherence.

Responsibilities include reviewing permits, assisting owners/operators with issues, investigating complaints, drafting enforcement documents, and accurate data entry into agency systems.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of environmental or natural sciences.
• Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific or technical reports and supporting documentation.
• Ability to prepare technical reports.
• Ability to use a personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to understand and apply applicable regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs.
• Ability to determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Conducts and documents compliance assistance and inspection activities for ERP facilities pursuant to rules and statutory requirements.
• Reviews permits for assigned facilities and conducts inspections for compliance and conditions of issued permits.
• Advises owners/operators with compliance issues as appropriate.
• Investigates assigned complaints and recommends compliance and enforcement actions as appropriate.
• Drafts basic compliance and enforcement documents such as compliance assistance offer letters, warning letters, notice of violations, consent orders and model documents.
• Responsible for accurate and timely entry of required data and system information into agency databases and Oculus.
• Assists with outreach and compliance assistance to owners and operators as needed.
• Participates in training activities as required.
