Overview
The Environment Manager is responsible for planning, scheduling, lifecycle management, and cost optimization of all non-production environments (Dev, QA, UAT, Performance). Acting as a critical enabler for project and product delivery, this role ensures environments are stable, available, and cost-effective.
The Environment Manager coordinates across technical towers (DBAs, Infra, Security, Network, Application) and DevOps teams to integrate CI/CD pipelines, maintain smooth deployments, and manage environment operations.
This position also oversees environment sharing, conflict resolution, risk escalation, and cost optimization across cloud and infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Own and manage the NPE calendar (test cycles, releases, refreshes, maintenance).
- Allocate and prioritize environments in collaboration with delivery teams.
- Manage environment sharing, resolving contention across multiple teams.
- Identify risks early (conflicts, capacity, performance) and escalate as needed.
Technical & DevOps Coordination
- Act as the single coordination point with DBAs, Infra, Network, Security, and Application teams.
- Partner with DevOps teams to integrate CI/CD pipelines and align deployments with NPE governance.
- Ensure environments are provisioned, refreshed, and configured with required dependencies.
Operational Ownership
- Oversee environment builds, refreshes, patching, and upgrades.
- Monitor health, availability, and performance in partnership with SREs.
- Ensure compliance with audit, security, and data standards.
Cost & Optimization
- Own accountability for cloud and environment cost optimization.
- Track actual vs. estimated usage and right-size environments.
- Implement automation and governance to reduce idle spend.
- Partner with the NPE Intake Analyst for demand forecasting and request feasibility.
- Coordinate with the Change Manager to align changes with environment schedules and readiness.
- Work with the Incident & Request Manager to resolve systemic environment issues identified through RCAs.
Delivery & Governance Support
- Define activities, responsibilities, milestones, resources, and budgets to ensure cost/time alignment.
- Anticipate risks, develop contingency plans, and apply governance models.
- Track KPIs such as environment availability, defect leakage, and cost efficiency.
- Support software delivery methodologies and reusable best practices to improve delivery outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- 6–8 years of experience in Environment, Release, or Platform Management with large-scale NPE coverage.
- Strong coordination experience across technical teams (DBA, Infra, Network, Security).
- Proven experience working with DevOps teams on CI/CD pipeline integration and automation.
- Deep knowledge of AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and environment orchestration.
- Hands-on experience managing shared environments and resolving contention.
- Strong understanding of cloud cost optimization/FinOps (AWS Cost Explorer, Kubecost, CloudHealth).
- Excellent stakeholder management, risk escalation, and communication skills.
