Job summary

City of Sacramento is seeking a Junior Plant Operator in the Water Division. The role involves supporting surface water treatment plants, with multi-barrier treatment for over 500,000 people. The position may rotate between day, swing, and graveyard shifts to meet operational needs.

Ideal candidates are eager to learn water treatment operations, prioritize safety, and communicate effectively within teams. Experience in pumps, valves, and basic laboratory tasks is valued.

Qualifications

• Six months experience in water, wastewater or swimming pool operations or preventive maintenance on pumps/electrical equipment.
• Completion of a related education program in water treatment or mechanical/electrical tech.
• Driver license required at time of appointment; ability to obtain higher class with endorsements as needed.

Responsibilities

• Make scheduled and preventive maintenance checks on facility equipment such as pumps, motors, and air compressors.
• Lubricate equipment and change oil as required.
• Load and unload chemicals using appropriate equipment and connections.
• Operate plant and pool equipment by reading meters and gauges and adjusting controls.
• Assist in collecting water samples and performing routine laboratory tests.
• Perform general janitorial and grounds maintenance duties.
• Operate heavy equipment such as forklifts and cranes when required.
• Work in confined spaces with appropriate PPE as needed.
