Job summary

The University of Florida is seeking an Entry Treatment Plant Operator to begin a career in water reclamation. You will learn to operate the Water Reclamation Plant safely, record instrument readings, review data, and assist with sludge de-watering and routine maintenance.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a Florida Class E license, with the Class C wastewater license to be obtained within 18 months. Training covers shift operations and daily recordkeeping.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; must obtain a Class C wastewater operator's certificate within two years of employment.
• Florida Class E license required; Class C license must be obtained by 18 months.
• Knowledge of: advanced wastewater treatment principles, hand tools, computer use and safety rules.
• Learn skills in chemistry, biology, mechanical workings, and process control.

Responsibilities

• Learn to operate the Water Reclamation Plant safely and efficiently, following all procedures.
• Record instrumentation readings, review data, and take corrective action.
• Operate sludge de-watering equipment as required.
• Perform routine cleaning of buildings, rinse tanks and chlorine contact chambers.
• Conduct required laboratory analyses and respond to test results.
• Monitor operational status of all equipment and adjust as needed.
• Shift from automatic to manual operation and back as required; perform checkout procedures and calibrations.
• Maintain plant operation and security during weekends, holidays and after-hours; keep daily records.
• Assist plant mechanics with preventive maintenance.
