Job summary

YMCA Detroit is seeking Entry Level Swim Instructors at the South Oakland Family YMCA. Responsibilities include instructing swimming lessons, building relationships with students and parents, and maintaining program records.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age with some high school education.
• Current CPR, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification or training provided.

Responsibilities

• Instruct swimming lessons and prepare lesson plans according to YMCA standards.
• Build relationships with parents and students to monitor accomplishments.
• Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules.

General Function

The Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

• At a minimum, some high school level education (over 16+ years of age)


• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification, and Emergency Oxygen


• Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification OR training provided.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons and prepares lesson plans according tothe YMCA.


• Builds effective, authentic relationships with parents and students to connect and inform parents of each other and students’ accomplishments.


• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers students and parents to other programs.


• Maintains records and attends meetings and trainings as scheduled.


• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Abilities & Skills

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.


• Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average-sized child.
