Job summary

The Boll Family YMCA in Detroit is seeking a Swim Instructor who will lead swimming classes, plan lessons, and motivate students. You’ll build strong connections with parents and students, communicate program schedules, and help families access aquatics offerings.

The role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and ongoing staff trainings. Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, CPR/First Aid/AED certification, emergency oxygen, and YMCA instructor certification or training provided.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and 16+ years of age.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
• Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification OR training provided.
• Ability to teach swimming and connect with parents and students.
• Willingness to participate in training and meetings.

Responsibilities

• Instruct swimming lessons and prepare lesson plans according to the YMCA.
• Build authentic relationships with parents and students to share progress.
• Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules to families.
• Maintain records and attend meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

General Function

The Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

• At a minimum, some high school level education (over 16+ years of age)
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification, and Emergency Oxygen
• Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification OR training provided.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons and prepares lesson plans according to the YMCA.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with parents and students to connect and inform parents of each other and students’ accomplishments.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers students and parents to other programs.
• Maintains records and attends meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Abilities & Skills

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
• Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average-sized child.
