Actalent is seeking an entry-level Distribution Design Engineer I in Kalamazoo, MI. The role focuses on planning, engineering, and designing electric distribution systems for safe and reliable power delivery, with strong growth potential within a large utility-focused organization.

You will work under experienced engineers, perform field engineering, and use CAD tools to develop drawings and documentation while supporting post-construction reviews and client communications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related technical field is required.
• Experience with CAD tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation) for engineering design.
• Experience with electric utility design projects is preferred.
• Willingness to work in both field and office/remote settings.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Must live within a 40-minute radius of Kalamazoo, MI.

Responsibilities

• Plan, engineer, and design electric distribution systems for residential and commercial customers.
• Determine need, size, location, and timing of distribution infrastructure considering constraints.
• Develop work packages for overhead and underground distribution.
• Perform field engineering to gather requirements and verify conditions.
• Use CAD tools to create and update drawings and documentation.
• Support post-construction reviews and client communications.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external utility clients.
• Follow codes such as the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) where applicable.
• Assist with voltage, transformers, and distribution equipment tasks.
• Communicate clearly with peers and clients to explain design processes.
• Escalate complex issues to senior engineers as needed.
• Support administrative tasks and field inspections.
• Participate in field inspections and hybrid design work.
