Job summary

Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center seeks an entry-level Juvenile Detention Officer to supervise youths 24/7 and ensure their health, safety and welfare in a secure facility.

The role involves counseling, enforcing rules, handling crises, transporting youths, and coordinating daily programs; a high school diploma is required, with First Aid/CPR certification due within 90 days. A background check is mandatory and the incumbent may be subject to drug testing.

Qualifications

• Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility to ensure health, safety and welfare.
• Offer individual and group counseling to youths to promote personal responsibility and alternatives.
• Make sound judgments during crises and report actions to supervisor; document actions taken.
• Discipline youths by enforcing rules and documenting behavior for appropriate personnel.
• Serve as back-up to staff; perform duties such as administering medications, transporting youths, intake assessments or discharges as needed.
• Conduct inspections, rounds, drills, room checks and searches; transport youths to appointments.
• Coordinate and provide daily educational and entertaining programs and activities.
