Job summary

Dallas County is seeking an entry-level Juvenile Detention Officer to provide direct supervision of youths in a 24-hour detention facility. The role focuses on ensuring health, safety, and welfare in line with department policies and procedures.

The position includes counseling youths individually and in groups, enforcing facility rules, and documenting incidents. You may perform related duties such as medications, transport, intake/discharge, and occasional shifts, including overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, and establish working relationships with staff and the public.
• Must obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 90 days of hire.
• Must be certified as required by TJJD standards within six months of employment.
• Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Must pass a thorough background check and mandatory drug testing.

Responsibilities

• Supervise youths in a 24-hour detention facility to ensure health, safety and welfare.
• Provide individual and group counseling to youths to promote responsibility and alternatives.
• Discipline youths per facility rules and document behavior.
• Assist with meals, transportation, intake/discharge processing, and occasional disciplinary actions.
• Must be able to perform handling with care techniques and restraining methods as required.
