Job description

Entry Level – Distribution Planning Engineer
Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities

POWER Engineers, a member of WSP, within the Distribution Engineering Services group, is seeking a distribution planning engineer responsible for electrical studies and planning of electrical distribution systems (typically 34.5kV and below) in the power delivery/electrical utility sector. The position is fully remote, reporting to the Richmond, VA office. Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting distribution system planning studies, including construction work plans, long-range plans, short-medium term plans, real and reactive power flow studies, voltage drop studies, operational and outage studies, and load forecasting.
  • Interacting with various stakeholders to gather information and improve electrical distribution system studies.
  • Leading and performing engineering tasks on complex projects requiring specialized knowledge.
  • Exercising authority and technical leadership, with strategic, long-term implications.
  • Tracking project schedules and budgets.
  • Participating in industry working groups or standards (IEEE, CIGRE, IEC, ANSI).
  • Presenting at industry conferences.
  • Traveling as needed.
  • Supporting other distribution disciplines such as Protection and Grid Modernization.
Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems or relevant internship experience.
  • Understanding of basic engineering practices, research, evaluation, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in teams, self-motivated, proactive learner.
  • Strong command of English, with good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to pass client's background screening.
Desired Education/Experience
  • EIT license with the goal of obtaining PE license.
  • Experience with electrical power system analysis software such as CYME, Milsoft, or Synergi.
  • Over 2 years of experience in the electrical power delivery industry.
  • Knowledge of utility standards and overhead/underground distribution design.
  • Experience with integrating distributed generation in planning.
