Job summary

CalHR is seeking a Child Support Specialist I to manage a caseload, interview custodial and non-custodial parents, and help establish and enforce child support obligations. The role includes preparing legal documents and maintaining case records in a statewide system.

Under close supervision, you will receive in-service training and progress toward greater independence. Promotion to level II after one year is expected upon satisfactory performance.

Qualifications

• Two years of full-time clerical experience with public interaction.
• One year in debt collections including interviewing for information.
• One year in Child Support Assistant I or Office Assistant II in a Child Support Services Dept.
• 60 semester or 90 quarter units of college accepted for experience.

Responsibilities

• Manage a general caseload of child support actions and establish/enforce payment obligations per guidelines.
• Coordinate appointments for interviews with custodial/non-custodial parents, employers, and attorneys.
• Develop and analyze information for establishing paternity.
• Locate information on assets, income, and liabilities using various methods.
• Evaluate income/expenses to determine child support obligations.
• Explain child support laws and court rules to public and staff.
• Prepare and process legal documents for establishment, collection, and enforcement of support.
• Document and update case information in a state-wide automated system.
• Provide case status information and explain resolution processes to involved parties.
• Apply federal, state, and local codes in processing cases.
• Coordinate/genetic tests when needed.
