Job summary

Vertex Pharmaceuticals seeks a Sr. Principal AI Engineer to design and build an enterprise agentic AI platform powering intelligent applications. You will lead scalable, secure capabilities for RAG pipelines, knowledge retrieval, and agent orchestration within a mature platform architecture.

The role requires deep expertise in AI platforms, LLM-based applications, and governance, with hands-on guidance to cross-functional teams. Strong leadership and strategic architecture skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, AI, ML, or related field.
• 10+ years designing enterprise-grade AI/ML platforms and distributed systems.
• Experience with RAG systems, vector search, document retrieval, and knowledge integration.
• Experience with AI orchestration frameworks, workflow engines, and multi-step agent execution patterns.
• Experience building centralized operational platforms for monitoring, governance, observability, and control.

Responsibilities

• Define the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for Vertex’s enterprise agentic AI platform.
• Design and build reusable platform services for safe, reliable AI-powered applications.
• Lead architecture and implementation for RAG pipelines and knowledge retrieval systems.
• Establish frameworks for agent lifecycle management including deployment, monitoring, and evaluation.
• Develop a centralized AI Control Tower / Gateway with monitoring, governance, and security controls.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, data, security, and UX to deliver reusable platform capabilities.
• Set standards for AI reliability, evaluation, safety, and performance measurement.
• Guide platform APIs, service contracts, and reusable components.
