Job summary

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking an Agent Engineer for the Agentic AI Platform to prototype, build, and productionize multi-step AI agent workflows deeply integrated with enterprise systems and digital products.

The ideal candidate will move from prototype to production, connect agents to APIs, iterate on real-world use cases, and ensure scalability, security, and observability across Vertex’s platforms. Hybrid-eligible or on-site options are available.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI, Data Science, or related field; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
Hands-on experience building applications powered by large language models or agentic systems.
Experience integrating software with APIs, data sources, and enterprise systems.
Experience using AI-assisted software development and autonomous coding agents to design, test, and refactor code across complex enterprise systems.
Strong understanding of AI-native software engineering practices and governance for responsible AI coding assistants.

Responsibilities

Design, prototype, and productionize AI agents and multi-step workflows for internal and user-facing use cases.
Collaborate with end users, product teams, and stakeholders to solve real workflow problems quickly.
Ensure agents can call APIs, retrieve information, and act within enterprise guardrails.
Integrate agents with internal platforms, enterprise APIs, and business-critical systems.
Develop reusable agent patterns, prompts, tools, and orchestration logic scalable across use cases.
Iterate on agent behavior using usage data, feedback, and metrics.
Support deployment, monitoring, and optimization of agents in production.
