Job summary

Midcontinent Independent System Operator, Inc. seeks an AI Governance Engineer to help build and evolve the enterprise AI governance framework as the organization expands its use of generative and agentic AI.

You will develop guardrails, controls, and oversight mechanisms to enable responsible AI while supporting innovation and scalability. The role focuses on creating a scalable AI governance platform, risk-based registration, monitoring, and evidence capture across internal and vendor AI

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, AI or related field.
• 8+ years of experience in software, data, or ML engineering, with at least 3 years building/evaluating production ML/AI.
• Experience designing, building, and operating shared platforms or internal products.
• Solid understanding of model training, evaluation, and failure modes.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for enterprise AI governance platform as a scalable product.
• Define a repeatable risk‑tiered governance framework with controls, monitoring, and incident response.
• Deliver a central AI registry and intake process to identify, register, and tier high‑risk AI systems.
• Build automated capabilities for registration, observability, and evidence capture with traceability.
• Create reusable evaluation tooling for ML, generative AI, and agentic systems and ensure continuous improvement.
• Define monitoring thresholds and runbooks for AI failure, validated by tabletop exercises.
• Provide leadership with reporting on AI quality, usage, cost, and value; collaborate across teams.
