Job Details

JOB TITLE: English as Second Language Teacher

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SUPERVISES: Students

DEPARTMENT: English Language Services

JOB STATUS: Full-Time (35 hours/week)

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

SALARY/BENEFITS: Refer to Teacher Collective Bargaining Agreement

Job Function

Collaborates with classroom teachers to provide English-language instructional strategies to English Language Learners (ELL) to increase proficiency; views each student holistically, valuing academic, social, and emotional growth; understands each student as an individual with unique needs.

This position reports directly to the school principal and functionally to other school administrators and district directors. It involves coordination with teachers, instructional coaches, school psychologists, social workers, support staff, students, guardians, and the community.

Term

Works the 10-month school calendar as defined by the Board of Education and Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plans and develops engaging, age-appropriate, student-centered English-language instruction adhering to best practices and curriculum guidelines.
  • Designs and delivers individual and group lessons using diverse teaching techniques suited to various learning styles; bases groupings on assessment data.
  • Collaborates with staff to identify ELL students, supports staff and guardians, and provides instructional strategies.
  • Ensures students meet grade-level standards through tutoring, preparing materials, and evaluating performance.
  • Monitors student progress; communicates professionally with staff and guardians; maintains positive relationships.
  • Establishes classroom management rules to ensure engagement and safety; supervises students on grounds and during trips.
  • Maintains necessary records and paperwork.
  • Stays informed about research and best practices in English-language education.
  • Supports diversity and equity initiatives.
  • Encourages a cooperative school climate; celebrates student achievements.
  • Participates in meetings, conferences, and training.
  • Attends scheduled work and arrives on time.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

  • Ability to adapt teaching to developmental stages.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Education or related field, appropriate state license or certification, and ESL Endorsement required. A master's degree, additional endorsements, and prior teaching experience are preferred.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged sitting or standing, ability to lift up to 15 pounds, and ability to adjust tone and height for teaching. Accommodations will be provided as needed.
