Job summary

Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. is seeking an Engineering Technician IV to join our Construction and Survey team in Schaumburg and Vernon Hills, IL. The role is an exempt, salaried position reporting to the Project Manager or Senior Project Manager.

You will perform advanced technical tasks, lead site representation during Phase III construction, and ensure adherence to contract plans and standards. A strong background in civil engineering with eight years of related experience is required.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or HSE certificate.
• A bachelor’s or associate degree in an engineering technical field, or twelve years with education/experience in civil/public works.
• Eight years of civil/municipal engineering or related experience, including four years as a major contributor.
• Valid Illinois driver’s license and ability to drive for company business.
• IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities Certification is required.
• Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley OpenRoads Designer is a plus.

Responsibilities

We are seeking an Engineering Technician IV to join our growing Construction and Survey team in Schaumburg and Vernon Hills, IL.

How you will make an impact:

The Engineering Technician IV will report to the Project Manager or Senior Project Manager and perform project management tasks for a wide variety of construction projects. This role is an exempt, salaried, position.

Responsibilities:

• Perform independently more challenging duties including preparation of detailed technical reports, exhibits, engineering plans, calculations, contract specifications, and opinions of probable cost.
• Possess the ability to interpret and apply state and local policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations and prepare reports, specifications, plans, studies, and designs for projects.
• Responsible for ensuring project team’s tasks, project schedules, and budgets are met.
• Performs quality control, quality assurance, and constructability reviews and makes recommendations for design stage modifications.
• Serve as the lead on-site project representative performing and/or supervising support staff with Phase III construction engineering duties as it relates to the process of observing construction improvements to ensure contractor’s work complies with contract plans, specifications, and standards.
• Knowledge of and perform required documentation for Phase III Construction Engineering utilizing County, State, and Tollway guidelines and processes.
• Proactively analyze, seek relevant data, and solve complex and/or challenging construction related problems individually or collaboratively.
• Perform the most complex technical engineering functions in both field and office environments and requires the ability to work independently and in a team environment, managing multiple, simultaneous projects with minimal errors.
• Assist in preparation of qualification and cost proposal production and implement marketing initiatives.
• Maintaining technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives; attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, and attending internal technical/management training.

EDUCATION:

• Must have a high school diploma or a High School Equivalency (HSE) Certificate.
• A bachelor’s or associate degree in an engineering technical field requires, or twelve (12) years with combination of education and experience in civil or municipal engineering, public works, construction, or field related experience.

EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE:

• Eight (8) years of civil or municipal engineering, public works, construction, or field related experience including four (4) years as a major contributor on deliverable development or project leader.
• Must be capable of driving/operating a motor vehicle for company business, maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License, and have a registered, insured personal vehicle.
• IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities Certification required.
• Experience participating in industry professional societies preferred.
• Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation OpenRoads Designer is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to independently identify, evaluate, select, and apply engineering or discipline criteria and standards to manage the development of technical documents across several engineering disciplines.
• Manage the development of technical documents frequently requiring the use of engineering design software or delegation of design software usage to team members.
• Possess a thorough understanding of the requirements and processes of low to medium complexity projects sufficient for developing work plans and reviewing work products.
• Self-starting, detail-oriented individual that will work in a collaborative environment to set and manage project and task scope/schedules/effort expectations in compliance to the Division’s Quality Management Plan and clearly communicates them to other team members.
• Ability to manage personal schedule to align with multiple project schedules while communicating progress status to team members and supervisor.
• Lead project-related communication and meetings with clients and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrate the ability to technically mentor and train junior-level employees.
• Assist in the development of portions of project proposals.
• Proficiency with software products: Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
• PDF editing software (Adobe, Bluebeam, etc.)
• Work is performed in both an office environment and outdoors and requires moderate physical demands, including sitting, standing, or walking on uneven surfaces and/or exposure to inclement or extreme weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
