Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. is seeking an Engineering Technician III to join our Construction and Survey team in Schaumburg and Vernon Hills, IL.

The role reports to the Project Manager and performs project management tasks across a variety of construction projects, with strong emphasis on field data collection and on-site leadership. We value coachable, organized professionals who communicate clearly.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or HSE certificate.
• Bachelor’s or associate degree in engineering technology is preferred, or eight years with combination of education and experience in civil or municipal engineering, public works, construction, or field related experience.
• Four years of civil or municipal engineering, public works, construction, or field related experience including two years as a major contributor on deliverable development or project leader.
• IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities certification preferred or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Perform field investigations and data gathering for engineering plans and specs.
• Assist in preparing detailed technical reports, exhibits, plans, calculations, and cost opinions.
• Read/interpret policies, codes, and regulations; prepare reports and construction design documents.
• Lead on-site project representation for roadway and municipal projects; oversee field surveying and construction inspection.
• Review work for completeness and accuracy.
• Communicate with project managers and clients; attend meetings and annotate notes.
• Prepare memos and letters related to design or construction work.

Job Details: Job Location: Main Headquarters - Vernon Hills, IL 60061, Position Type: Full Time, Salary Range: $36.00 - $40.00 Hourly, An exciting opportunity is available to join Gewalt Hamilton Associates (GHA), an employee-owned, multi-faceted civil engineering and land surveying company that has built a reputation of civil engineering with a personal approach. We are seeking an Engineering Technician III to join our growing Construction and Survey team in Schaumburg and Vernon Hills, IL.

How you will make an impact:

The Engineering Technician III will report to the Project Manager or Senior Project Manager and perform project management tasks for a wide variety of construction projects. We seek coachable and motivated individuals who demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills. This role is an exempt, salaried, position.

Responsibilities:

• Perform independently or with minimal guidance, field investigations and gather data for the preparation of engineering plans and specifications.
• Assist in the preparation of detailed technical reports, exhibits, engineering plans, calculations, contract specifications, and opinions of probable cost.
• Possess the ability to read, interpret, and apply state and local policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations, and prepare reports, specifications, plans, studies, to support the design of projects.
• Serve as the lead on-site project representative with limited oversight performing construction engineering duties of various roadway and municipal infrastructure improvement projects, that include field surveying, construction layout, inspection of material placement, measurement of quantities, and other tasks related to ensuring contractor construction is completed in compliance with plans, specifications, and standards.
• Review the work of others for completeness and accuracy.
• Must be able to take direction, collaborate with other team members, have good interpersonal skills, and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Communicate with project managers and clients regarding project issues; attend meetings and provide written annotations of the meeting.
• Perform a variety of related office or field tasks to gather, analyze and record data; prepare a variety of memos, letters and other correspondence related to design or construction work.
• Obtain and/or maintain technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives, attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, and attending internal and external technical training.
• Independently complete civil design tasks that assist engineering staff in the preparation of engineering designs and reports, related drawings, specifications, and construction projects estimates.

EDUCATION:

• Must have a high school diploma or a High School Equivalency (HSE) Certificate
• A bachelor’s or associate degree in an engineering technical field is preferred, or eight (8) years with combination of education and experience in civil or municipal engineering, public works, construction, or field related experience

EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE:

• Four (4) years of civil or municipal engineering, public works, construction, or field related experience including two (2) years as a major contributor on deliverable development or project leader.
• IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities certification preferred or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
• Must be capable of driving/operating a motor vehicle for company business, maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License, and have a registered, insured personal vehicle.
• Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation OpenRoads Designer is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to independently identify, evaluate, select, and apply engineering criteria and standards to lead the development of technical documents across select engineering disciplines.
• Apply discipline design criteria and independently obtain field data and record information to be used in production of engineering drawings and reports.
• Possesses an understanding of typical workflows with low complexity projects.
• Self-starting, detail-oriented individual that will work in a collaborate environment completing engineering design tasks according to scope/schedule/effort expectations with limited oversight.
• Ability to manage personal schedule to adhere to multiple project deadlines while communication progress status.
• Assists in project-related communication and meetings with clients and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrates the ability to technically mentor and train junior-level employees.
• Assists in the development of portions of project proposals.
• Proficiency with software products:
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • PDF Editing Software (Adobe, Bluebeam, etc.)

Work is performed in both an office environment and outdoors and requires moderate physical demands, including sitting, standing, or walking on uneven surfaces and/or exposure to inclement or extreme weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
