Job summary

HX5, LLC in Huntsville, Alabama is seeking an Engineering Technician to work onsite in a laboratory environment at Redstone Arsenal. The role requires assembling, testing, and documenting data for electronic and network equipment, with a strong emphasis on following precise instructions and safety protocols.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED, basic science/engineering knowledge, and experience with Windows OS and basic electronics.

  • Experience reading and understanding specifications and detailed work instructions.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of Windows operating systems and computer hardware parts.
  • Basic understanding of fiber optic connector types (LC, SC, ST) and handling/cleaning protocols.
  • Previous experience reading basic wiring diagrams or electrical schematics.
  • Hands-on experience with cable termination tools, crimpers, cable testers, and basic hand tools.
  • Experience building or repairing personal computers and electronics.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble or construct standard equipment or parts following specific instructions.
  • Set up, configure, and deploy desktop computers, laptops, printers, and other electronic test equipment.
  • Assist with physical network infrastructure deployment and basic network connectivity troubleshooting (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN).
  • Guide non-technical users through step-by-step problem-solving processes.
  • Escalate complex issues to senior IT team members when necessary.
  • Perform precision component-level soldering for electronic repairs and modifications.
  • Route, pull, secure, and install fiber optic and Ethernet cable infrastructure to meet test environment requirements.
  • Maintain clean, organized cable management within server racks and test benches.

HX5 is currently seeking an Engineering Technician to work onsite in a laboratory environment at Redstone Arsenal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Constructs components, subunits, or simple models or adapts standard equipment; may troubleshoot and correct malfunctions.
  • Follows specific layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment.
  • Conducts various tests or experiments which may require minor modifications in test setups or procedures as well as subjective judgments in measurement, selecting, preparing, and operating standard test equipment and records test data.
  • Assemble or construct standard equipment or parts following specific instructions.
  • Service and repair simple instruments or equipment as directed.
  • Conduct tests using established methods and operate test equipment.
  • Prepare test specimens and accurately record and verify test data.
  • Extract and process engineering data field notes, manuals, lab reports, etc., processing data, identifying errors or inconsistencies, selecting methods of data presentation.
  • Identify deviations caused by equipment issues or observational errors.
  • Present processed data in prescribed formats for engineering review.
  • Assist in design modification by compiling data related to design, specifications, and materials that are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts; develop information concerning previous operational failures and modifications and use judgment and initiative to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seek sources to clarify information.

  • Custom-build, terminate, and test Cat5/Cat6 ethernet cables and coaxial cable connections
  • Route, pull, secure, and install fiber optic and Ethernet (Cat5/Cat6) cable infrastructure to meet specific test environment requirements
  • Maintain clean, organized cable management within server racks, test benches, and ceilings/walls
Education and Experience
  • High school graduate or GED

  • Experience with forklifts, aerial lifts, and bridge cranes
  • Experience or knowledge of RDH
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week requiring 10-hour workdays Monday thru Thursday.

Other Position Requirements
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Requires ability to obtain and maintain NASA Public Trust background screening requirements.
  • Must be able to pass a MSFC physical examination for any required safety-related certifications.
  • All positions supporting the METTS III contract are subject to NASA medical screenings at the start of employment and annually, as determined by the outcomes of the Safety, Health, and Environmental Job Assessment Questionnaire.
  • With or without reasonable accommodation must be able to operate various machines, lift, bend or crouch occasionally.
