Job summary

The City of Janesville is seeking an Engineering Technician I to provide skilled technical support for public works projects. You will perform drafting and design work using AutoCAD Civil 3D and ESRI GIS, prepare plans and maps, and assist with field surveys and inspections.

The position requires an associate degree in a related field, one year of field experience (or two years as an intern), a valid driver's license, and the ability to communicate clearly with staff and the public.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology, land surveying, construction technology, construction management, geography/GIS, or related field is required.
• A minimum of one year of field work and practical office experience, or two years as an engineering intern with field experience, is required.
• A valid, state-issued driver’s license at time of hire is required.
• A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

Responsibilities

• Performs drafting and design work on AutoCAD Civil 3D software, ESRI GIS, and other related computer design equipment.
• Prepares and updates plans, diagrams, maps, and as-built drawings for street, water, and sewer improvements using AutoCAD and ESRI GIS.
• Inspects construction work for compliance with specifications and regulatory requirements.
• Operates survey equipment for field surveys, establishing alignments and construction staking.
• Obtains field traffic data and performs data collection.
• Records and maintains field books and project documentation.
• Assists in the preparation of reports, specifications, cost estimates, bid summaries, payments, and work orders.
• Completes condition assessments of City infrastructure.
• Communicates City policies and procedures clearly to the public.
• Follows safety regulations and reports unsafe conditions.
