Location
The employee in this position will function as an Engineering Technician I based in the Division 1 / District 2 Field Office located in Ahoskie, North Carolina.
Description of Work
The employee must provide support to higher level technicians and engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, and construction traffic control. The position supports a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data. The employee must be proficient in record keeping with the ability to obtain and maintain certifications needed to perform material sampling and testing related to this position.
Responsibilities
- Supports higher level technicians and engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, and construction traffic control.
- Performs a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data.
- Proficient in record keeping with the ability to obtain and maintain certifications needed to perform material sampling and testing related to this position.
- May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Employee may be assigned to work on the survey party and perform surveying tasks as assigned or may be assigned to inspect roadway and bridge projects, all in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Use testing instruments, read plan details to make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
- Perform entry level technical work in a specific materials area or perform sampling, testing and inspection duties to determine specifications.
- Exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, climbs on the substructure and superstructure of bridges.
- Expected to work outside in various types of weather, terrain, and hours.
- Must lift 50 lbs.
- Safety toe shoes are required for this position.
Requirements
- Ability to perform a full range of calculations and computations.
- Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to read plan details to make accurate field measurements and inspect roadway and structure components.
- Ability to perform entry level technical work in a specific materials area or perform sampling, testing, and inspection duties to determine specifications.
- Attainment of QMS Asphalt and Concrete Testing certifications.
- Proficiency in record keeping and certification maintenance needed for material sampling and testing.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Management Preferences
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
- Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports.
- Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad, and software.
- Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.
Qualifications and Experience
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- If there are not qualified candidates, the agency may consider a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements, with salary set at a lower level and adjusted when the trainee obtains necessary education and experience.
Salary
- Salary Grade: NC07
- Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408
