Job summary

City of Carlsbad is seeking an Engineering Technician to support the Utilities Division within Public Works. The role involves GIS data updates, engineering plan preparation, and coordination with engineers, staff, and contractors.

The Engineering Technician will perform CAD drafting, analyze utility data, and help maintain city assets in GIS while collaborating across departments to meet CIP objectives and service commitments.

Qualifications

• Knowledge/experience with ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop.
• Ability to read and interpret final maps, grading plans, improvement plans and other related documents.
• General knowledge of federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations affecting the areas of assigned responsibility.
• Knowledge of basic methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis and report presentation.
• Ability to organize, analyze, correlate and summarize data.
• Basic knowledge and use of computer software including: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

Responsibilities

• Prepare or assist in the preparation of maps, exhibits, engineering drawings, plans, estimates of project quantities and costs.
• Perform CAD and drafting using AutoCAD for water and recycled water distribution and sewer systems.
• Coordinate with suppliers, vendors, and contractors to obtain quotes.
• Assist in data collection and analysis for utility systems.
• Assist staff with meeting prep, minutes, and other tasks.
• Maintain plan files and engineering records.
• Update the GIS asset database and data dictionary.
• Create and print custom maps and spreadsheets from GIS data.
