Job description

Bascom Hunter is seeking a hands-on Engineering Technician / Assembly Intern to support the assembly, integration, and testing of aerospace and defense products and systems. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with hardware, using tools, assembling components, troubleshooting problems, and seeing a product come together from individual parts through final testing.

The intern will work closely with engineers and technicians to support mechanical and electrical assembly, prototype builds, testing, and other hands-on activities across a variety of aerospace and defense programs.

Bascom Hunter provides custom solutions to the Department of Defense and aerospace markets, with capabilities spanning advanced electronics, communications, RF systems, environmental control, thermal management, power, and other mission-critical technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform hands-on mechanical and electromechanical assembly of components, subassemblies, and systems.
  • Assemble products and prototypes using engineering drawings, work instructions, schematics, and other technical documentation.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, measurement equipment, and other assembly equipment safely and effectively.
  • Install and assemble mechanical hardware, electronic components, wiring, connectors, fasteners, and related components.
  • Support cable, harness, and connector assembly as applicable.
  • Assist engineers and technicians with prototype builds, product integration, and development activities.
  • Support setup and execution of functional, environmental, and other product testing.
  • Assist with troubleshooting assembly, integration, and test issues.
  • Perform measurements and inspections to verify assemblies meet drawing and specification requirements.
  • Document assembly activities, test results, discrepancies, and other relevant information.
  • Maintain organized work areas, tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Follow established quality, safety, configuration control, and manufacturing procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve assembly processes, tooling, work instructions, and overall workflow.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and operations personnel to support project and production requirements.
Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a technical degree, certificate, or other relevant education in engineering technology, electronics, manufacturing, mechanical technology, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in hands-on mechanical, electrical, or electromechanical work.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn the use of hand tools, power tools, and measurement equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow technical instructions and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn new assembly, manufacturing, and testing techniques.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous hands‑on experience with mechanical or electrical assembly.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, torque tools, or precision measurement equipment.
  • Experience assembling electronic components, cables, connectors, wiring, or electromechanical systems.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, or assembly instructions.
  • Experience with soldering, crimping, cable assembly, or other electronics assembly techniques.
  • Familiarity with laboratory or electronic test equipment such as multimeters, power supplies, or oscilloscopes.
  • Experience with machining, fabrication, 3D printing, or other prototyping methods.
  • Previous technical, manufacturing, automotive, robotics, electronics, military, trade school, or similar hands‑on experience.

This is a paid internship opportunity with both full-time and part-time schedules available. Summer interns typically work full-time, with opportunities for part-time work during the academic year based on business needs and intern availability.
