Job summary

Bascom Hunter is seeking an Embedded Software Eng Intern to join our Baton Rouge, LA team and support the development, integration, and testing of embedded software for aerospace and defense systems.

You will work with engineers to write, debug, and optimize software for microcontrollers and embedded platforms, interfacing with hardware, and helping ensure system reliability through verification and testing.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience programming in C or C++.
  • Understanding of embedded systems and software development concepts.
  • Basic understanding of computer architecture and hardware/software interfaces.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated team player with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in design, development, integration and testing of embedded software and firmware for aerospace and defense systems.
  • Write, debug, test and optimize embedded software using C/C++.
  • Develop software for microcontrollers, processors and embedded platforms.
  • Support hardware/software integration and troubleshoot issues at component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Assist with development of device drivers, communication interfaces, and low-level software.
  • Interface embedded software with sensors, actuators and system hardware.
  • Support implementation and testing of communication protocols and interfaces.
  • Develop test software, scripts and tools for software verification and system testing.
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and integration activities.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, systems and software engineers on integrated solutions.
  • Assist with laboratory testing, data collection and performance analysis.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation including requirements and test reports.
  • Learn and apply industry-standard embedded software development and verification processes.

Bascom Hunter is seeking an Embedded Software Engineering Intern to support the development, integration, and testing of embedded software for aerospace and defense applications. The intern will work alongside engineering teams to develop software that interfaces directly with electronic hardware and supports the operation, control, and monitoring of mission-critical systems.

This position provides hands-on practical experience throughout the embedded software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, coding, hardware/software integration, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation. This internship provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on real aerospace and defense engineering programs and may provide a pathway to future employment opportunities with Bascom Hunter

Bascom Hunter provides custom solutions to the Department of Defense and aerospace markets, with capabilities spanning advanced electronics, communications, RF systems, environmental control, thermal management, power, and other mission-critical technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the design, development, integration, and testing of embedded software and firmware for aerospace and defense systems.
  • Write, debug, test, and optimize embedded software using languages such as C and C++.
  • Develop software for microcontrollers, processors, and other embedded computing platforms.
  • Support hardware/software integration and troubleshoot issues at the component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Assist with the development of device drivers, communication interfaces, control logic, and other low-level software.
  • Interface embedded software with sensors, actuators, electronic components, and other system hardware.
  • Support implementation and testing of communication protocols and interfaces.
  • Develop test software, scripts, and tools to support software verification and system-level testing.
  • Participate in software design reviews, code reviews, integration activities, and technical meetings.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, systems, and software engineers to develop integrated solutions.
  • Assist with laboratory testing, data collection, troubleshooting, and analysis of system performance.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including software requirements, design documentation, test procedures, and test reports.
  • Learn and apply industry-standard embedded software development, configuration management, and verification processes.
  • Support software development intended to meet applicable aerospace and defense industry standards and customer requirements.
  • Make engineering decisions driven by data, analysis and overall project/team goals.
Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience programming in C or C++.
  • Understanding of fundamental embedded systems and software development concepts.
  • Basic understanding of computer architecture, digital electronics, and hardware/software interfaces.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience developing software or firmware for microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs, or other embedded platforms.
  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS) or bare-metal embedded development.
  • Experience with embedded communication interfaces and protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, or similar interfaces.
  • Familiarity with device drivers, bootloaders, or board support packages.
  • Experience using debugging and laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or JTAG debuggers.
  • Experience with Git or other version control and configuration management tools.
  • Familiarity with Linux or embedded Linux environments.
  • Experience with Python or other scripting languages for testing and automation.
  • Understanding of software verification, testing, and debugging methodologies.
  • Familiarity with aerospace or defense software development standards and requirements.
  • Previous internship, research, laboratory, project team, or other relevant technical experience.
  • Understanding of storage class specifiers, compilers, and memory management in C/C++.
  • Other relevant hands on engineering/software experience (personal projects, extra-curriculars, ect…).

This is a paid internship opportunity with both full-time and part-time schedules available. Summer interns typically work full-time, with opportunities for part-time work during the academic year based on business needs and intern availability. Start and end dates are flexible based on the intern's academic schedule.

The internship provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on real aerospace and defense engineering programs and may provide a pathway to future employment opportunities with Bascom Hunter.
