Job description

This position is open from Monday, March 10 until filled. Applications must be received by 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2025 to be considered for the first review.

Join our dynamic team as an Engineering Technician with the UFSWQD, where you'll play a pivotal role in supporting a variety of exciting engineering projects! In this position, you'll provide technical expertise and develop collaborative solutions in system improvements, agency projects, and more, working both in the office and out in the field. You'll assist with development reviews, data collection, stormwater modeling, and help streamline processes for better efficiency. Whether you're organizing project files, performing field surveys, or assisting with technical tasks, you'll gain hands-on experience while contributing to the success of our agency’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Explains UFSWQD development review procedures to permit applicants.
  • Performs Tier I development review tasks in accordance with written directions and assists engineering staff to complete development reviews.
  • Indexes, files, updates, researches and compiles data from various sources.
  • Collects, summarizes and stores programmatic data to improve program effectiveness using computers, source documents, and other records according to established procedures.
  • Provides administrative, logistical and technical support to project and construction management staff by organizing and coordinating records, files and databases; gathers, records and evaluates data; assists with meetings, document preparation and enforcement of standards or specifications.
  • Performs data collection in the field such as surveying, bathymetry collection, asset inventories, asset condition assessments, and others as assigned.
  • Completes assigned stormwater modeling support tasks including mapping and report assistance.

Supervisory Duties:

The position has no supervisor or lead worker responsibility.

Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft Office365 applications; primarily Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Basic engineering and/or architectural terminology, practices and procedures
  • Basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics related to engineering work

Skill & Ability to:

  • Ability to read and interpret various kinds of maps, architectural and engineering drawings, construction plans, and other technical materials and documents.
  • Perform basic engineering and mathematical computations; utilize specialized drafting, engineering, surveying or electronic tools, materials and equipment.
  • Perform detailed work thoroughly, neatly, accurately and efficiently.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District management and staff, contractors and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Search and obtain information from such documents as engineering or architectural drawings, regulations, reports, application forms, manuals, property records, plans, specifications and various kinds of maps, graphs and construction plans; gather, record and analyze data to prepare technical reports, documents and recommendations.
  • Carry up to 50 pounds over uneven and sloped terrain.
  • Travel to and from work sites using district vehicles as needed.

Education, Experience, and Special Requirements:

  • High school degree or G.E.D. equivalent, and 1-3 years of directly related working experience.
  • Valid state driver’s license.

Preferred skills & qualifications:

  • Project management training or experience.
  • Knowledge of stormwater management principles and practices.
  • Experience using surveying equipment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or natural resources field preferred.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS software.

Working Environment: Most UFSWQD office staff work a primarily hybrid schedule, with occasional time in the office as determined by the Division Manager. UFSWQD reserves the right to change the remote work policy. Hours may vary but should fall between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. However, there are projects that may require time in the field; exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, flowing water, water-borne pathogens found in floodwater, and off-road driving conditions; standing, walking, driving, hiking, digging, and may be required to carry 50 pounds. Employees are required to utilize the appropriate PPE for their time in the field. During flood fighting season, October 15th – May 15th, employees may be asked to perform levee and drainage inspections or serve in some capacity within the District’s Incident Management Team during emergencies. Position also requires availability during evenings and weekends periodically to support community events sponsored by UFSWQD.
