The State of North Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an Engineering Specialist I (S) for the Roadside Environmental Office, Division 10.

The role supervises Engineering Technicians, reviews daily inspection reports, schedules project personnel, and conducts project field reviews to ensure contracts for Rest Area Maintenance, Selective Vegetation, Mowing, Sweeping and Irrigation are properly prepared and administered.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in engineering technology with six years of progressive technician experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• High School diploma or GED with eight years of progressive technician experience.
• Equivalency language allows qualification by education or experience as detailed in the guide.

Responsibilities

• Review daily inspection reports and schedule project personnel.
• Conduct project field reviews and ensure contract compliance.
• Assist in preparing and administering contracts for Rest Area Maintenance, Selective Vegetation, Mowing, Sweeping, and Irrigation.

Position will supervise Engineering Technicians, with duties including, but not limited to, reviewing daily inspection reports, scheduling project personnel and conducting project field reviews. Position will work closely with the Division Roadside Engineer to ensure that contracts for Rest Area Maintenance, Selective Vegetation, Mowing, Sweeping, and Irrigation are prepared and administered correctly. Position will provide technical guidance to the Roadside Environmental Unit crews and will assist the Division Roadside Engineer in ensuring the successful delivery of work plans. The position will provide prompt responses to maintenance needs and in delivering the Roadside Environmental Unit Program.Additional Expectations:Thorough expertise and understanding of concepts, practices, and theories used in Roadside Environmental. Ability to serve as a technical expert while independently accomplishing assigned tasks. Thorough knowledge of state and/or federal rules and regulations for Roadside Environmental to ensure compliance and provide guidance/interpretation. Ability to independently conduct complex inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes and specifications. Ability to effectively use verbal and nonverbal skills to express complex technical and/or program concepts to related facts in a clear, concise, organized and persuasive manner. Ability to function in a full supervisory role for direct reports. May require ability to perform/supervise several administrative functions. Must be familiar with MS Word and Excel. Must be able to legally operated a motor vehicle. Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM F2413-05 will be required within thirty (30) days of employment.
