Job summary

Wausau Supply Company in Schofield, WI, is seeking an Engineering Specialist to support manufacturing operations through process documentation, data collection, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

You will serve as a bridge between manufacturing and engineering, help maintain standards, support equipment and process improvements, and drive safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Technology, Mechanical Technology, Engineering or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of manufacturing, maintenance, quality, or process-related experience.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing data collection and reporting tools.
  • Experience supporting equipment installations, process improvements, or project activities.
  • Experience in manufacturing and distributing building products is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily manufacturing operations by troubleshooting process and equipment issues.
  • Work with operators, maintenance, and engineering personnel to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Assist with implementation of process changes and manufacturing improvements.
  • Develop, update, and maintain work instructions, visual aids, process documentation, and SOPs.
  • Collect production, quality, and equipment performance data.
  • Support Lean and 5S initiatives and safety programs.
  • Coordinate project tasks and vendor interactions during installations.
  • Ensure compliance with defined quality and safety requirements.

WHAT THIS ROLE WILL BE DOING:

The Engineering Specialist supports manufacturing operations through process documentation, data collection, troubleshooting, continuous improvement activities, and project execution. This position serves as a key link between manufacturing operations and engineering, assisting with maintaining process standards, supporting equipment and process improvements, and helping drive safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives. The Engineering Specialist works under guidance while developing technical expertise in manufacturing processes, equipment, and continuous improvement methodologies.

Key Duties/Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
Manufacturing Support
  • Support daily manufacturing operations by assisting with troubleshooting process and equipment issues.
  • Work closely with operators, supervisors, maintenance, and engineering personnel to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Assist with implementation of process changes and manufacturing improvements.
  • Participate in production meetings and provide technical support as needed.
  • Help maintain manufacturing standards and best practices.
  • Develop, update, and maintain work instructions, visual aids, process documentation, and standard operating procedures.
  • Support document control activities related to manufacturing processes.
  • Assist with process audits to ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Track and maintain process changes and engineering records.
Data Collection & Analysis
  • Collect production, quality, and equipment performance data.
  • Assist with analysis of manufacturing metrics including productivity, scrap, downtime, and OEE.
  • Prepare reports, charts, and presentations to communicate findings.
  • Support root cause investigations through data gathering and problem-solving activities.
  • Participate in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support 5S, visual management, and workplace organization efforts.
  • Assist with identifying opportunities to improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost.
  • Help implement corrective actions resulting from improvement projects.
Project Coordination
  • Support improvement and capital projects.
  • Coordinate project tasks, schedules, and follow-up activities.
  • Assist with equipment installations, testing, and process validations.
  • Work with vendors, contractors, and internal teams during project execution.
Quality & Safety
  • Support safety initiatives and risk reduction activities.
  • Assist with quality improvement projects and corrective actions.
  • Participate in audits, investigations, and process reviews.
  • Help ensure manufacturing processes operate within defined quality and safety requirements.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and manufacturing process understanding.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Demonstrates initiative, curiosity, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.
Education and Experience:
  • Associate degree in Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Technology, Mechanical Technology, Engineering OR equivalent combination of education and manufacturing experience.
  • 2+ years of manufacturing, maintenance, quality, technical, or process-related experience.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement activities.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing data collection and reporting tools.
  • Experience supporting equipment installations, process improvements, or project activities.
  • Experience in manufacturing and distributing building products is a strong plus.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Travel Requirements:
  • Up to 5% (Domestic and/or International.)
