Job summary

Columbia University Irving Medical Center's Facilities Department seeks an Assistant Building Manager to lead Engineering Operations and Life Safety. You will oversee daily maintenance for critical building systems, automate controls, and manage work tickets, reporting to stakeholders including clients and occupants.

The role emphasizes collaboration with vendors and internal teams, ensuring safe operations, regulatory compliance, and timely project execution in a complex academic medical center

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience plus four years related experience.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; some lead/supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of building operations and management in a complex institutional environment.
• Must hold or obtain a valid F-85 Certificate of Fitness as Fire Safety Director within nine months; certification sponsorship possible by employer.
• Ability to work flexible hours.

Responsibilities

• Oversees and manages daily operations for maintenance of HVAC, electrical, piping/plumbing systems.
• Coordinate with outside vendors for follow-up on scheduled maintenance.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate general maintenance, major repairs, and remodeling projects.
• Maintain records of maintenance, operating costs, and permits.
• Respond to building fire alarms and participate in drills; manage fire life safety documentation.
• Coordinate custodial and engineering teams during events and emergencies.
