Job summary

Discord is seeking a highly technical Engineering Manager to lead the Safety ML team, owning detection systems for content understanding, account integrity, and platform abuse. You will build and guide a team of ML engineers, shape the technical roadmap, and ensure production ML systems scale to protect millions of users.

You will collaborate across Trust & Safety, Product, Policy, Legal, and Data Science, mentor engineers, and contribute to an ownership-driven, high-impact culture.

Qualifications

• 5+ years as a Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, or Applied Scientist
• 3+ years as an Engineering Manager leading 5+ engineers
• Hands-on depth in abuse/fraud detection, content classification, behavioral modeling, graph-based modeling, or LLM-based classification
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration
• First principles thinking with pragmatic solutions
• Proven record of shipping ML systems to production at scale
• Passionate about coaching and leading engineers while contributing code when needed

Responsibilities

• Build and lead an exceptional ML engineering team by hiring, coaching, and fostering ownership
• Define the technical vision and roadmap for Safety ML with partners across Trust & Safety, Product, Policy, Legal, and Data Science
• Own end-to-end production safety models, from capability definition to performance and operational health
• Improve processes and raise the bar to deliver outstanding results
• Collaborate with Trust & Safety on labeling quality, golden sets, and automating investigations
• Work with other Engineering Managers to improve the Engineering organization and culture
