Job summary

Topstep seeks an Engineering Manager to lead a team within the Trading Platform that builds and runs TopstepX, a real-time system supporting order flow, market data, and numerous integrations. The role focuses on reliability, delivery, and health of the team, with occasional hands-on work.

You will coach engineers, manage performance, and partner with senior engineers, product, and operations to align on roadmap and priorities.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with production systems, integrations, and operations.
• 2+ years of engineering management experience with hiring, directing, coaching and developing engineers across levels.
• Track record of delivering complex technical work balancing feature delivery with reliability and technical investment.
• Experience leading teams owning production systems, on-call and incident response.
• Track record of building inclusive, collaborative cultures grounded in psychological safety and continuous learning.
• Technical credibility to guide architecture and trade-off decisions for backend and distributed systems (high-availability, real-time, event-driven).
• Hands-on background with .NET/C# and distributed systems, plus AWS and containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Excellent communication across technical and non-technical audiences; able to advocate for team needs with peers and business stakeholders.
• Data-informed approach to team health, delivery, and reliability; good judgment on what to measure.
• Comfortable leading through shifting priorities and balancing capacity against business needs.
• Preferred: trading/fintech or regulated financial environments; futures or trading-platform experience a plus.
• High-availability, low-latency, real-time systems.
• Microservices and real-time messaging (WebSocket/SignalR).
• Cloud operations / infrastructure and on-call.
• CI/CD tooling (Argo CD, GitHub Actions).

Responsibilities

• Run the Team: set direction, hiring bar, interview process, capacity planning, and day-to-day operation.
• Lead and Develop the Team: 1:1s, feedback, performance reviews, coaching, and fostering a culture of psychological safety and high standards.
• Drive Reliability and Operational Excellence: ensure availability, performance, resilience, on-call health, incident follow-through, observability and tooling.
• Drive Delivery: own delivery cadence and outcomes, influence roadmap for technical investment and reliability needs.
• Partner across the Org: collaborate with senior engineers, other engineering leads, Product, and operations; keep leadership informed on progress, risks, and trade-offs.
