Job summary

PayJunction is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a software engineering team responsible for production Java systems and shaping the platform’s technical direction.

You will own delivery predictability, set quality standards, and ensure secure, scalable architectures while maintaining hands-on coding when needed. This role blends leadership with direct technical contribution in a flexible work model.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with production systems.
• 3+ years at Senior Engineer level or above with hands-on coding.
• 3+ years engineering management; led 4+ engineers, including hiring and performance reviews.
• 5+ years of Java experience with production Java within the last year.
• 2+ years running Scrum ceremonies as Scrum Master or equivalent.
• Preferred: Linux/Ubuntu, payments or B2B SaaS, PCI DSS/regulatory environment; BS CS or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Own the team’s technical vision and roadmap, lead design reviews, mitigate key risks in a payments platform.
• Run Scrum ceremonies and protect sprint scope to ensure commitments.
• Partner with Product to scope and size initiatives and negotiate scope when capacity is exceeded.
• Set the definition of done for tests, reviews, and docs; perform code reviews across levels.
• Grow engineers through 1:1s, development plans, and coaching.
• Manage employee lifecycle from hiring to coaching while maintaining psychological safety.
• Stay in the codebase—ship production Java each sprint and review frontend changes (HTML/JS/Angular).
• Own services in production including monitoring, deployments, and incident response with PCI DSS considerations.
