Job summary

PayJunction is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of software engineers, own the technical direction, and ensure delivery on a payments platform where defects are a financial event.

You will stay hands-on with production Java, mentor engineers, run Scrum ceremonies, and partner with Product to scope initiatives while embedding security and PCI DSS requirements. This role offers flexibility with Santa Barbara or remote work.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with hands-on ownership of production systems.
• 3+ years at Senior Engineer level or above; spent at least half of recent management role hands-on in code.
• 3+ years of engineering management, directly managing a team of 4+ engineers, including hiring and reviews.
• 5+ years of Java experience including web frameworks with recent production Java.
• 2+ years running Scrum ceremonies as Scrum Master or equivalent.
• Prefers Linux experience, payments/B2B SaaS exposure, PCI DSS, and a BS in Computer Science or sustained senior engineering work.

Responsibilities

• Own the team's technical vision and roadmap; lead design reviews and mitigate key risks in a payments platform.
• Run Scrum ceremonies end-to-end; protect sprint scope and ensure commitments are met.
• Partner with Product to scope, phase, and size initiatives and manage capacity.
• Define and enforce done criteria for tests/reviews; perform substantive code reviews across the team.
• Mentor engineers, build development plans, and grow people toward their next level.
• Own the employee lifecycle for the team, including hiring, onboarding, reviews, and coaching.
• Stay in the code: ship production Java each sprint; review HTML/JS/Angular frontend changes.
• Own production services: monitoring, deployments, incident response; bake PCI DSS into designs.
