Job description

DBM Vircon, a premier construction modeling, detailing and digital engineering company, delivers high-profile projects with state-of-the-art technology, uncompromising detail and millimeter precision. At DBM Vircon we see the future through a very different lens. With over five decades of experience in the mining, energy, and infrastructure sectors, DBM Vircon is recognized as one of the industry-leading design/detailing and digital engineering companies. Drawing upon over 900 team members, with experience in over 6 continents, we regularly challenge the status quo by delivering high-end solutions and integrated delivery methods on some of the industry’s largest projects. Innovation, eminence, and digital are at the heart of everything we do.

Position Overview

We’re looking for a Engineering Manager to lead and scale our Connection Design Services function across the North American market. In this role, you’ll be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Connection Design portfolio, with accountability for strategy, service delivery, operational performance, governance, and continuous improvement. You’ll play a key role in shaping a scalable operating model that supports growth, drives efficiency, and ensures high-quality engineering outcomes across projects.

Initially, this position will take a hands‑on approach, directly supporting sales enablement, estimating coordination, and project management for Connection Design work. As demand grows, you will progressively build and lead a dedicated team, establishing the systems, standards, and delivery frameworks needed for long‑term success.

This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for a technically strong and commercially minded engineering professional who can connect strategy with execution, lead people effectively, and embed technology into design delivery to build capability across the business. We are particularly looking for a leader who is technology-forward and future-minded — someone who is energized by innovation, understands how digital tools and automation can improve engineering workflows, and is excited by the opportunity to help shape the next generation of Connection Design capability at DBM Vircon.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead the day‑to‑day operation and growth of the Connection Design Services function in North America, establishing scalable processes, governance frameworks, and delivery standards.
  • Oversee service readiness and quality assurance across the portfolio, including workforce planning, training, estimating methodologies, and technology enablement.
  • Drive planning, forecasting, cost control, utilization, and performance reporting to support operational excellence and sustainable growth.
  • Provide structured support for sales and tender activities, including scope definition, estimating coordination, proposal governance, and final estimate review.
  • Partner with internal commercial and project teams to ensure strong alignment between estimate assumptions, project scope, and live delivery execution.
  • Own project delivery governance for Connection Design work, ensuring consistent planning, execution, monitoring, reporting, and close‑out across all projects.
  • Lead sponsor meetings and provide clear reporting, decision‑making support, and escalation pathways where required.
  • Maintain strong contract administration discipline, including management of claims, variations, change orders, and schedule impact notices.
  • Implement robust project controls, including budget tracking, program oversight, risk identification, mitigation planning, and early corrective action.
  • Allocate specialist engineering resources effectively to optimize utilization, maintain delivery quality, and support capacity planning.
  • Build and lead a high‑performing team, initially in a hands‑on capacity and progressively through a scalable team structure as the function expands.
  • Drive performance management, capability development, mentoring, succession planning, and leadership development across direct and indirect reports.
  • Recruit and support key technical and leadership roles, aligning team objectives to delivery priorities, quality standards, and business growth.
  • Partner with senior leaders across the business to improve operating rhythms, infrastructure, and people programs that support scale.
  • Clearly communicate engineering concepts to non‑technical stakeholders, helping build broader engineering capability across the organization.
Work Experience
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience within the engineering/design sector, ideally with exposure to industrial, structural, or connection design projects.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in a business, operational, or engineering management capacity.
  • Experience engaging with senior clients, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders to support delivery outcomes and strategic pursuits.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to align technical delivery with business objectives, cost control, and growth opportunities.
  • Experience in a consulting, engineering services, steel/detailing, or design‑led environment will be highly regarded.
Education/Training
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Additional qualifications in leadership, management, or business operations are highly regarded.
  • Extensive and relevant industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal academic qualifications.
  • Must hold a Professional Engineer (PE) designation, with strong professional standing and ideally licensure across multiple U.S. states.
Software & Technology
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Experience using CRM platforms such as Microsoft CRM, Salesforce, or similar systems.
  • Strong familiarity with engineering design packages and technical delivery tools relevant to connection or structural design.
  • Exposure to technology‑enabled delivery workflows and digital process improvement initiatives is highly valued.
  • Python or other coding/programming capability is highly regarded.
  • Interest in emerging technologies, including AI‑assisted workflows and digital innovation in engineering delivery, will be highly regarded.
