Harvey AI in New York is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Backend Platform team. You will own frameworks, libraries, and core abstractions that product engineers rely on daily—from database access to caching and observability—while shaping architectural boundaries and automated safeguards.

You will hire and develop engineers, set technical direction, and partner with Security, Infrastructure, and Product teams to deliver reliable, scalable software at scale.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience and 3+ years of engineering management experience.
• Deep technical judgment in backend architecture and distributed systems, including database access patterns, concurrency, caching, API design, and performance.
• Experience building shared libraries, frameworks, or internal platforms adopted by multiple engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow the Backend Platform team, giving engineers ownership, meaningful challenges, and room to grow.
• Define the platform’s technical vision and roadmap in collaboration with product engineering teams.
• Build the next generation of Harvey’s backend foundations across frameworks for database access, session management, caching, and streaming.
• Help Harvey scale through better architecture by collaborating with Infrastructure on databases, replicas, and new storage systems.
• Scale the data layer with a flexible data access strategy across stores and maintain read replicas.
• Make failure boring by load testing, implementing circuit breakers, timeouts, retries, and isolation mechanisms.
• Enhance security and reliability of the platform by coordinating with Security and product teams on data handling and workspace isolation.
• Shape a codebase that humans and AI can build in confidently with modular boundaries and automated checks.
• Translate platform improvements into customer impact by reducing latency, improving observability, and reliability.
• Stay close to engineering, lead architecture discussions, review critical code, and drive adoption across related teams.
